How does it work?

In case you haven’t yet heard of it, consider the Mirror gym the coolest piece of fitness equipment you never knew you needed.

At first glance, the Mirror appears to be just that — a sleek home decor piece that can be installed to hang from your wall or stay free-standing. Looks can certainly be deceiving, since this mirror comes equipped with a library of more than 10,000 workouts and over 50 different fitness class types to bring a world of new workout possibilities. In addition to the vast library of workouts, you can also join in on live classes that bring the feel of your favourite fitness studio into your home.

Mirror displays the workouts directly onto its surface using advanced technology to make your workout experience personalized, challenging, and safe. Some of its features include a built-in camera to keep you connected to class instructors, real-time personalization programs, and personal training. Mirror even syncs with most Bluetooth enabled heart rate monitors and fitness trackers to show you whether you are working out at the right level of intensity.

First impressions

As someone who loves mixing things up when it comes to workouts, one of the biggest draws for me to try out the Mirror gym was the wide variety of workout classes to choose from. While I was only able to put one to the test when I stopped by Lululemon’s Queen St. store in Toronto, I was able to browse through the entire library of options and choose a workout that best suited my needs that day.

In the end, I went with a 30-minute barre workout, which only required a yoga mat and a chair as equipment. Some workouts don’t require any equipment at all (like dance or HIIT-style bootcamp), while others have the option to incorporate weights, resistance bands and more.

I found the workout to be just the right mix of challenging an motivational, since the on-screen instructor helps to keep you going through the whole class. I also liked how every move was displayed on screen in front of you, so you can easily follow along — even if certain things are new to your fitness journey.

The workout includes a timer in the upper left corner to show your progress and count down until the next exercise, which I found especially helpful in the middle of a tough round of squats and pliés. It does take some getting used to the fact that the digital display shines through onto the mirror’s surface, but once you get used to seeing both the instructor and your own form at once, it was easy to get the hang of things.

Final thoughts

If you’re looking for a way to switch up your at-home fitness routine, I would definitely recommend checking out the new Mirror gym as a way to try out a wide variety of workouts from the comfort of your own home.

It is a steep investment upfront, but one that may eventually end up saving you money — especially if you’ve been subscribing to a pricey boutique fitness studio. It’s important to note that there is a monthly $39 USD subscription fee required in order to take advantage of the online library, which is another added cost to factor into your decision.

Ultimately, the Mirror is a very cool way to bring the experience of a fitness studio home without requiring tons of space. Unlike other fitness equipment like a treadmill or stationary bike, the Mirror gym is easy to incorporate into virtually any room. For those of us living in smaller homes, its space-saving design could be another reason to purchase this device over other home gym equipment.

That said, if you’re someone who isn’t a fan of following along to a guided workout and would prefer to do your own thing, this may not be the best fit for you.
